Blog Question number nine: How important is education?

I would have to say that education is one of the most important things that exists. Uneducated you can be led into all kinds of pitfalls. It is the lack of education that is responsible for many of the evils that exist in the world today, hatred being number one on that list. However, I guess the term education has to mean the learning of useful information that would benefit society and not learning stereotypes and hatred, which tend to be passed down from generation to generation.

If you are taught to read you can learn many things. If you are taught to be discerning you can learn even more. Mathematics is also an important skill which serves you well in life. You may not always be able to use mathematics directly but the same methods are used for logical calculations which can be used in almost every circumstance to solve every day problems. I think history is only important in order that we learn from the mistakes which were made in the past so that we are not doomed to repeat them. Geography is important because it broadens your horizons. It is also helpful for anyone who ever intends to travel anywhere outside of his/her own community.

I think that the most important thing you can teach someone is how to learn properly. In order to learn properly, you have to be discerning. You have to be able to sift the gold from the sand. There is a lot of information out there, much of it contradictory. In order to pick out the information that is relevant and useful you have to learn the skill of critical thinking. I am taking a critical thinking course in college right now. I think it is helping me to become more open minded and also helping me to learn better.

Education might not always help you to find a better job but it will help you to be creative and find unique ways to solve problems. That will help you be a contributing member of society as well as a valued member of your work team. Education will also help you make better choices in life so that you have a more fulfilled and fruitful existence. There are very few aspects of life that education cannot contribute to if you let it. However, education is a choice. Even if you send a child to school, you cannot make them learn. Even if you force college down the throat of every adolescent, you cannot make them care. The importance of education should be stressed, but it is still a choice.
